USA scholarship opportunity

An exciting opportunity to explore the American education system is on offer for NASUWT members.

The Walter Hines Page Scholarship offers teachers the opportunity to travel to the USA to study an aspect of education that is relevant to their own professional interests and development.

Previous scholars have examined subjects including:

• approaches to educating children with autism;
• a comparison between US and UK approaches to teaching children with English as an additional language; and
• the impact of ethnic background on children’s attainment.

Organised by the English Speaking Union (ESU), the programme aims to encourage the exchange of ideas, understanding and pedagogy between teachers in the UK and US.

Scholars receive a grant to fund their trip and have the opportunity to visit a number of American towns and cities during their twoweek visit. Accommodation is provided, along with a programme of social and cultural activities to allow scholars to get a taste of American life.

The trip must be taken between October 2012 and May 2013 and scholars must submit a report of their trip within a month of their return.

For further details and an application form, please contact the NASUWT’s Education team on 0121 453 6150 or via email at education@mail.nasuwt.org.uk.

Application forms must be submitted by the closing date of 24 November 2011.

AXA UK launches national awards scheme to recognise excellence in children

The Ambition AXA Awards is a new awards scheme created by financial services provider AXA to nurture talented young people between the ages of 11 and 18 who really want to succeed in sport, enterprise, the arts, science, or in the community.

The awards aim to provide young people with a tailored package of support, advice and coaching to help them realise their ambitions. Winners will receive a chance-of-a-lifetime bespoke development package, which could be worth up to £40,000 each.

A panel of high-profile leaders in their field have been selected to choose the winners. Leading the panel is Sir Alan Steer, education and behaviour specialist, Paul Evans, Group CEO of AXA UK, and senior AXA representatives. They will be joined by:

• Enterprise – business executive Karren Brady and John May, CEO of Young Enterprise;
• Science – Jason Bradbury, presenter of Channel 5’s the Gadget Show, and Annette Smith, CEO of the Association of Science Education;
• Community – Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of children’s charity Kids Company, and Lucy de Groot, CEO of Community Service Volunteers (CSV);
• Sport – Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams, and Marc Woods, Paralympian and Board member of the Youth Sport Trust;
• The Arts – Musician and writer Alex James, and Laura Gander-Howe, Director, Learning (Children & Young People) at Arts Council England.

Although the judging criteria for each category is different, the panel will ultimately be looking for someone who is not only talented but has the courage, commitment and confidence to succeed in their chosen field.

Teachers are being encouraged to promote the awards to their most talented students as each application must be endorsed by an adult who is not a relative of the applicant.

The winners will be announced on 30 November 2011, after which the panel will help the winners to create a development package that will help them to achieve their goals.
