The German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) is a national service centre for climate research which depends on access to HPC systems. Climate


FluiDyna is a producer of hardware and software products for scientific purposes. The company combines graphics processing units and CPUs to create high-performance computers. The idea is to develop additional computation units that complement CPU technology by performing data- intensive tasks and, therefore, boost overall computation capacities. The advantage of graphics processing units is that they have a very high computing performance, whereas CPU units are best at tasks such as sequential algorithms. The main products are made up of fully-configured single- or dual-socket workstations that are designed to satisfy different demands. One example is the Typhoon supercomputing system which works with eight Nvidia processors. www.fluidyna.de


Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI will be focusing on elasticLM and


LAMA. elasticLM is a novel technology for creating and managing software licenses designed for distributed computing environments like grids or clouds, as well as local infrastructure, such as workstations or HPC clusters. Benefits include security mechanisms protecting both licenser and licencee, policy driven authorisation of license usage, reservation of licenses, budget control and non-repudiation of usage through dynamic Service Level Agreements, and monitoring and accounting of application and license use. LAMA is a computational library for the


acceleration of mathematical calculations in applications. It supports efficient usage of heterogeneous hardware architectures ranging from single multicore workstations to GPU Clusters. A comprehensive interface to BLAS operations on dense and sparse matrix storage formats for various platforms is offered, facilitating the development of mathematical applications. It is easily extensible towards further storage formats for matrices, as well as support upcoming hardware architectures. www.scai.fraunhofer.de

modelling produces enormous amounts of data – roughly 10 Pbytes every year at DKRZ. Climate research has evolved into a data-intensive science and DKRZ provides premium tools and services to deal with the typically large data sets. The interdisciplinary nature of climate research requires data integration across different disciplines and data types. Therefore, DKRZ supports the entire data lifecycle, including data documentation, data quality assurance, long- term archiving and network data access within international data federations. DKRZ presents some of the climate


simulation results with the spherical display ‘Omniglobe’. The research group ‘Scientific Computing’ at DKRZ informs about high-performance I/O optimisations, energy efficiency, and simulation of cluster infrastructure. During ISC’11, DKRZ will offer guided


tours of its computer and archives located within walking distance of the exhibition. www.dkrz.de


The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) will showcase its range of activities at ISC’11, including providing the Irish national HPC service; research community support through partnerships and education programmes; and commercial case studies in GPU computing, data mining and cloud computing. Experts will be on- hand to discuss how GPU computing has been used to tackle problems in climate modelling and in molecular dynamics. ICHEC has provided GPU computing


solutions addressing real business problems in geophysical modelling. The theme for ICHEC’s booth blends GPU computing with testimonials from commercial clients in data mining and cloud computing. The facilities and expertise provided by ICHEC as a Nvidia-designated Cuda Research Centre and as an active PRACE project partner (EU-wide HPC consortia) will provide a springboard for discussions. www.ichec.ie


Megware will present the ClustCool direct warm-water cooling system, which is adapted to Intel and AMD processors and is suitable for high packing densities due to the SlashEight blade system. Other components which still require ventilation are cooled with a slight air flow which requires little fan capacity and, therefore, little power. Low water pressure, low flow rate, piping and connections tested in industry ensure that leakage of water is almost impossible and the equipment and investment are safely protected. A density of 200 or more processors per


rack that could not previously be cooled by ventilation can be implemented now. The ClustCool solution allows recooling of the required cooling water through free cooling by the normal outside air at almost any location in Central Europe. The company will be at booth 711. www.megware.com
