“I’ve felt that affirmed over and over again,” he said.
Being tapped for the unpublished 3+4 program was more affirmation. Beau and Lydia, both students at Wartburg, had just gotten engaged. “We were trying to figure out how we were going to make this work, with me being a year behind her in semi- nary,” he said.
Record-keeping is meticulous, with significant collaboration between the schools’ registrars. On the undergraduate side, a student completes general education require- ments plus courses seminaries don’t typically offer. The student leaves college at the close of the third year—sans degree. After candidacy and admissions procedures, the student is admitted to seminary on a probationary basis (this is necessary because the student lacks an undergraduate degree). Credits from carefully chosen
first-year seminary courses transfer back to Wartburg College and count toward fulfillment of the undergradu- ate degree. At the end of the first year of seminary, the student receives a bachelor’s degree and is no longer on probationary status.
If it sounds complicated, it is— and should be, Nelson said. “I have been called a guinea pig and a pio- neer,” he said. “This isn’t going to be publicized as an option ‘anyone’ can have; it has to be the right fit.” At this time, Nelson is the only student to take advantage of the 3+4 program. While Kleinhans views it as a success, she understands there are few prospective students to whom she can promote the program. “There are two populations we believe this program would serve: the student who comes in knowing he or she intends to go to seminary, [and] the student without a bachelor’s degree for whom this might be an attractive second career,” she said.
