O
RGANIZATIONS today are searching for a strategy to reduce the demands placed on their IT infrastructure by the proliferation of data and the increased liabilities and user requirements of a mobile workforce. By utilizing centralized
data management and endpoint virtualization, many companies are finding ways to increase productivity and security while reducing the costs associated with traditional desktop management.
What Is Endpoint Virtualization?
Endpoint virtualization is the separation of the physical hardware from the end-user experience. Essentially, it’s a relocation of the resources you typically use on your computer. Instead of all those resources being scattered throughout individual computers in multiple offices or buildings, they’re all hosted centrally and delivered to users across the network. This is a much more efficient use of resources and drastically reduces the IT costs associated with maintaining distributed desktop systems. It also provides serious benefits to both the individual user as well as the organization as a whole.
Can Your Desktop Do This?
The main benefit of a solution using centralized data management and endpoint virtualization is that it simplifies many desktop and application lifecycle management requirements, including asset management for hardware and software, provisioning, updates and patch distribution, as well as reducing time-consuming maintenance tasks and desk-side visits. This solution greatly increases data security and enables more
reliable backup and disaster recovery solutions. Companies can keep all of their data in the data center, eliminating risk of loss, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Centralized data management and endpoint virtualization also pass on substantial performance benefits to the end-user. Employees gain greater access to the applications and data they use every day. Instead of being tied to the same physical location, users can enjoy true mobility without sacrificing functionality. They can log on to their virtualized desktop and have all the tools and information they need right at their fingertips—regardless of what device they’re using or where they are located.
A New Take on an Old Favorite
Most organizations are familiar with server virtualization, and while endpoint virtualization shares some similarities (and components) with this technology, there are a few key differences between the two that you need to be aware of during a deployment. Both technologies rely on central hardware hosting
virtual machines (VMs), but the VMs required for endpoint virtualization need to be tailored to the demands of end-user applications, not server-based workloads. Your users will be interacting directly with the endpoint VMs—unlike server virtualization, where the user interacts with the file and print sharing, email systems, and directory services that are running on the VM. Because of this difference, endpoint virtualization requires special consideration and a few extra components, such as a directory server, desktop VM coordination service, remote access protocol, file servers, and application repositories, to ensure the right levels of performance.
