The name fits. Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club’s big party attracted 176 anglers in 2011 for good times and plenty of fish. The Leeville, Louisiana, HQ is surrounded by endless miles of marsh chock full of reds, trout and flounder—it’s the very heart of Ma Nature. Don’t forget to count your spots—the redfish with the most earns a special prize.

TIP SHEET Victory at this Gulf slam event hinges on flounder. 2009 champ Brendan Bayard concentrates on the flatfish first. In March, they’re trickling in on their spring migration.

ONTARIO KAYAK

FISHING SERIES www.yak fisher .net

The three-tournament Ontario Kayak Fishing Series is blazing a trail across Canada’s frontier. The second stop on the tour is in Haliburton, Ontario, where competitors have a choice of five lakes to fish. The primary target is largemouth bass, but an extra 10 bucks gets anglers in the money for the biggest musky.

TIP SHEET 2009 champion Jeff Goudreau recommends making a long paddle in the morning to get away from the competition and into rewarding numbers of unpressured fish. “Just make sure you have a tail wind to get home,” he says.

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT A Storm Hot ‘N Tot for trolling and a white double diamond spinnerbait with a trailing stinger treble for casting.

KAYAK FISHING CLASSICS www.kayak fishingclassics.com

This 10-event saltwater series is a Gulf Coast points duel over bonus redfish and stealthy speckled trout. It starts in March and culminates in a November championship.

TIP SHEET

“Use a landing net,” 2010 winner Mark Knowles says. “The one that gets away could cost you the tournament.”

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT The Heddon Super Spook Jr. in a light color. Knowles feels it has the best surface action and acoustics.

DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT MirrOlure MirrOdine suspending twitch baits. Bayard says they match the typical March hatch of micro-baits.
