CONTRIBUTORS Alex Matthews
Longtime contributor and frequent Rock the Boat columnist Matthews has paddled all over the world but says it’s tough to leave home when you live in one of the absolute best kayaking destinations— Vancouver Island. In this issue, he explores the stigma attached to fellas flossing ladies’ paddling gear (“Confessions of a Cross- Paddler,” page 24). After all, he says, it’s important to address an issue that unjustly “casts aspersions on one’s manliness.”
Bruce Kirkby
Kirkby’s life sounds like the envy of every work-allergic free spirit: he’s spent the past 18 years guiding in Belize, the Canadian Arctic and on the West Coast, and hasn’t paid taxes since ’93. During that time, he’s managed to fund sea kayak trips in Hong Kong, Greenland, Borneo, Myanmar and throughout his B.C. backyard—with a bit left over to “prevent the kids from eating moss”—by writing about and photographing these wild places. Kirkby’s family is the subject in this issue’s Stills (page 20).
Conor Mihell
A contributor since 2003, Mihell is an award-winning adventure travel and environmental journalist. He’s also amassed over 10 years’ experience guiding multi-day sea kayak trips. Reporting on tripping tips in this issue’s expedition feature (page 37) got him stoked for more paddling. “It’s too easy to get caught up in work,” says Mihell, 30. “This piece taught me the importance of leaving it all behind.”
David Johnston
When he isn’t designing or debugging computer code, Johnston can be found teaching sea kayaking and playing in the waves kicked up by fall and winter storms. He enjoyed having an excuse to call up some of the key players in the rough water paddling world (“Rough Water Revolution,” page 43), but says there was one downside to his assignment, “It made me very jealous of their local paddling haunts.”
Michael Mechan
Adventure Kayak’s newest recruit, Mechan joined the editorial team last September. A recovering canoeist, he’s looking forward to raiding the AK boat basement this summer for some double-bladed adventures. Researching “Expeditions 2011” (page 41), he says, “Opened my eyes to a world of possibilities.”
