Chest. A good choice for larger spaces. Perfect for hiding those important things you need as you run out the door—camera, iPod, even a laptop.


Settee. Aside from giving your house a cozy, comfortable welcome, it’s a nifty perch for tying your running shoes or just plopping your purse.

A lamp, or a pair of them, depending on space. If there’s minimal or no surface area go with sconces. When considering a hanging fixture double check your ceiling height— 7 feet from the bottom of the fixture to the floor is plenty clearing for the tallest of guests.


Mirror. Simple or ornate? Let the style of your house decide.


Art. One strong piece or a collection of smaller pieces will do the trick. And, of course, fresh flowers if you’re expecting guests.

Rug. Going rug-less is an option, but in a high traffic area rugs protect the floor underneath.


A runner is typical since entries often tend to be long and narrow, though if you have an antique you want to use don’t opt out because the size isn’t perfect. Consider a custom seagrass cut to fit the space and throw the older rug on top. A faux animal skin is a nice surprise for modern interiors.
