School Bus Ads the New Seat Belt? In years past, seat belts have been a constant hot topic in many state legislatures. Tis year, occupant
restraints in school buses have been overshadowed by something more fiscally-based — advertising. Te question as to whether to allow school buses to become rolling billboards has been discussed by numerous states, with the thought that any revenue could help save school bus service from becoming the next victim of the budgetary chopping block. States such as Idaho, Florida and Utah have pondered the issue. So far this year, a law has passed in New Jersey that allows districts to set up school bus ad- vertising programs, and, as of this writing, a similarly passed bill awaits the signature of Utah Gov. Gary Herbert. Colorado is revisiting the concept, which has been a law in the state since the early 1990s. Op- ponents fear driver distraction and that any funds received by schools could lead to future budget cuts. Head over to

Seeking Your Opinion on Wheelchairs… Trough the end of this month, researchers at the University of Louisville and the
University of Pittsburgh are looking for some insight from the industry on real- world experiences with transporting wheelchair-bound students on school buses. Visit
www.surveymonkey.com/s/WheelchairsOnBuses to take part in the national survey as researchers are looking for data from “hands-on” attendants and drivers who work either full-time or part-time in wheelchair lift–equipped school buses and can help recognize areas of needed improvement. More information on the survey is available at
www.rercwts.org.
