The MLP will have the same diesel- electric propulsion technology as the Lewis and Clarke class T-AKE auxiliary replenishment vessel.
A build contract for the first MLP
(MLP-1) is due in the first quarter of 2011. According to NAVSEA, the MLP-1 is due to start construction in July 2011, with delivery scheduled for FY13. First of class trials are planned in FY14, to be followed by initial operational test and evaluation in FY15. Follow-on orders
for MLP-2 and
MLP-3 are projected for FY13 and FY15 respectively. Current plans call for all three ships to be delivered by the end of FY18. NAVSEA is leading a parallel effort
Further engineering and build
efficiencies are expected from the inclusion of Daewoo Ship Engineering Company (DSEC) in NASSCO’s design team (DSEC taking responsibility for developing a ‘highly producible’ structural design). In terms of general arrangement, the MLP features an open reconfigurable
mission/stowage deck and will, in its basic form, possess the ability to support a Core Capability Set that includes an elevated vehicle stowage deck, an LMSR sideport ramp for vehicle transfer, skin-to-skin mooring fenders, a US Coast Guard certified flight deck, three LCAC lanes, and an LCAC services catwalk.
to refine requirements for the Core Capability Set and translate these into a design and specifications. A separate contract will be awarded, following competition, for the design, development, construction and integration of the Core Capability Set for MLP-1, with follow-on options for MLP-2 and MLP-3. NAVSEA plans to install the Core Capability Set on the MLP post delivery from General Dynamics NASSCO. WT
