Forthcoming conferences and seminars

Disabled Teachers’ Consultation Conference, Saturday 11 June, Holiday Inn, Bromsgrove

The NASUWT continues to be at the forefront of supporting and engaging with teachers from groups under-represented within the membership and the profession throughout the UK to ensure that they have a voice and make a difference within education, the trade union movement and society.

At a time of rapid change and threats to public services, this highly popular annual consultation conference gives disabled teachers the opportunity to have their say on the impact of the Coalition Government’s policies and explore the challenges facing them in the workplace. Participants will also have the opportunity to share their experiences and discuss key professional issues, as well as hear from high-profile speakers.

New Teacher Seminar, Saturday 18 June, Hilton Metropole, Birmingham

As part of the package of support offered to new teachers during their first year in the profession, the NASUWT holds a series of professional seminars to offer advice and guidance to members on a range of topical issues. A range of speakers will be offering advice and guidance to attendees.

This event will give new teachers the chance to reflect on their induction year, discuss any concerns or issues with a range of experts and build on the skills and knowledge they have gained to make a confident start to their second year in the classroom.

The 2010 conferences were oversubscribed

Default retirement age to be scrapped

Employers will no longer be allowed to dismiss staff just because they have reached the age of 65, under new legislation.

The Default Retirement Age (DRA) is to be phased out from 6 April, and after 1 October employers will not be able to use the DRA to force staff to retire.

During the phasing-out period, only workers who were told they were being retired at 65 before 6 April and who are due to retire before 1 October can be compulsorily retired using the DRA.

The change in the law does not mean that employers cannot seek to retire employees but they must be able to objectively justify setting a default retirement age.

The NASUWT welcomes moves to give employees more flexibility in planning their careers but believes this must be backed up with adequate guidance to provide greater clarity to both workers and employers on the changes. It will be critical that older workers are aware of their right to be protected from unfair dismissal and age discrimination.
