NATURAL FENCE
Feed corn and mammoth sunflowers border the driveway, providing a privacy screen and bird habitat. Sunflower is also a good lead remediation plant if soils need cleaning—but plants must be disposed of, not composted.

ROAD BUFFER
A mixture of sunflowers and geraniums, and Asian roses (Rosa Rugosa) form a natural buffer with the nearby road. These plants are useful for various purposes, from making tea to treating acne.

VEGGIE CENTRAL
A large section of the yard is set aside for intensive food production. Perennial (and some annual) plant beds are arranged next to outdoor summer kitchen, barn, and storage sheds, plus composting areas and a chicken coop.

MOBILE GREENHOUSE
A small greenhouse can be moved to cover various crops in different seasons, extending winter growth and creating a balmy summer environment for heat-loving perennials.

MICROCLIMATES
By including several “edge” areas and vertical elements with tall and short plant varieties, plant growth is improved, soils remain healthy, and miniature ecosystems support each other.

SELF-SUSTAINING PLANTS
This diverse mix of mostly perennials includes both medicinal and herbal plants, including echinacea, calendula, bee balm, pink yarrow, native tall phlox, and native yarrow.
