Superior charged with illegally exhuming grave

THE SUPERIOR of the Marian Fathers in Britain has been charged with illegally removing a corpse from a grave. Fr Wojciech Jasinski has been accused of removing the remains of a 14-year-old boy, Witold Orlowski, who many Poles believe is a saint-in-waiting. Police say that the remains were

unlawfully removed from the boy’s grave in St Raphael’s Convent, Bullingham, Herefordshire, and taken to Fawley Court, Buckinghamshire, a property once owned by the Marian Fathers. The remains have now been officially reburied at Fairmile Cemetery, Henley-on-Thames. Fr Jasinski is due to appear at Worcester Crown Court on 3 May where he will enter a plea. In 1944, while his family were based in Mexico during the Second World War, Orlowski is said to have prayed that God would take his life rather than that of a local priest who was on his deathbed. A few days later, the previously healthy boy died while the priest made a full recovery. Many believe the event was a miracle. In 1953, the boy’s mother brought her son’s remains with her to Britain, evading customs.

Blaze destroys shrine chapel A chapel next to the historic eleventh-century Ladyewell Shrine in Lancashire has been almost completely destroyed by fire. The building – part of Ladyewell House, at Fernyhalgh near Preston – was damaged in a blaze that is thought to have started in a shop beneath it on Monday morning. The relics and religious artefacts were saved, although some suffered smoke damage.

Pupil transport charges condemned The Catholic Education Service (CES) has warned that councils cutting faith school transport are taking the “soft option” for saving money. It said that councils which that chose to remove discretionary subsidies were doing so “without foreseeing all the consequences for the school, parents and pupils.”

Cardinal praises India’s religiosity Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor said he found great respect for religion during his recent visit to India – something that was being lost in Britain. The emeritus Archbishop of Westminster was asked to represent Pope Benedict XVI at celebrations held to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of John Paul II’s historic visit to the country.
