Michael Shields/MS: Let’s talk about your new 2011 calendar, how this concept came up, and all the work that’s gone into it. Eric Anfinsen/E: Even though it’s a calendar of 12 months, the labor that goes into it probably takes about as long to create and publish it.
MS: I do want to let people know a little bit more about you. To see you grow as an artist, evolve as an artist, and strengthen yourself as an exceptional human being. I think everyone not only applauds it but now can’t wait to see what’s next for you. And people who remember your work in the past have set ex- pectations for you. Does that put a
lot of pressure of you? EA: It used to bother me but the broader, the deeper your body of work becomes, the less relevant it is. People have their favorites, peo- ple like things, they don’t like things. Bottom line is you just keep making it. Te thing that would bother me would be to do the same thing over and over and over again. I think the artist’s job is to try some new things. Tat is to push my own boundaries. If you stop creat- ing, that’s death.
MS: And that’s very instructive in itself, isn’t it? EA: It’s like a 3 year old. But at the same time once a piece in your home, it becomes part of the es- ethic. Tere are moments where you look at it and concentrate on it but also it’s just there. I’ve had the same painting above my bed for many years now. It’s just a familiar face that is there. It means a tremendous amount to me but it doesn’t demand a lot of attention all the time. It will accept it but it’s almost like art on standby. It’s ready when you are.

MS:Maybe we do take the paint- ings that we have in our homes for granted. Tey do create an esethic and yet it does become part of you because it’s not just a frame or some color. Tere’s a statement in how it moves you and you alone. It Continued
