Stephen Curry

Q&A

The bigger the stage the better the performance for Golden State Warriors guard STEPHEN (pronounced Steff-in) CURRY. The Oakland resident’s stock continues to rise as he narrowly missed NBA Rookie of the Year honors after being selected 7th overall in the 2009 draft. Curry grew up on the basketball court as his dad, Dell, played in the NBA. The former fi rst-team consensus basketball All-American helped change the college basketball landscape by leading his Cinderella Davidson team to the Elite Eight rewriting the school’s record books along the way. The soft-spoken athlete took up golf as a young child and played on his high school team in Charlotte. Long NBA seasons leave little time for anything other than x’s and o’s but the 22-year-old tries to squeeze in as many rounds as possible. Last year he created the Curry Celebrity Classic golf tournament along with his father where all proceeds go to local non-profi t organizations.

Ever polite, Curry recently took time after a Warriors practice (the gym rat was characteristically the last one to leave the court) to discuss his NBA career and passion for golf. –Hilary Heieck

How would you describe your golf game? Suspect would be the word. I’ve probably played once in the last month since I came back from the World Championships so I haven’t focused on it at all. •••

How often do you get to play? In the summertime I play three-four times per week. During the season it’s hard to fi nd time to get out there; when you have an off day you just want to rest and not got out and play golf. Last year I think I played four times during the course of the season.

Have you taken many lessons through the years? I took les- sons for three days when I was 9 years old. I can’t remember if I didn’t learn anything or just thought it was kind of boring to take lessons because I just wanted to play. So I picked it up naturally just playing and watching it on TV, listening to what the commentators had to say and reading Golf Digest. •••

Did your dad teach you the game? Yeah, he actually picked it up during his second year in the NBA; I was 6 or 7 and I used to go ride on the golf cart and take my putter
