End to a dramatic year T
he last twelve months has been an invigorating one for the industry if nothing else. Globally there was overall stellar growth but the picture was very different when viewed at a regional or local level requiring companies to develop a stronger awareness of local politics and other issues that are currently driving the
industry. The key driver continues to be government support to enable the currently more expensive methods of electricity generation to develop market share in lieu of the traditional fossil fuel based methods.
The year of 2010 will be remembered as a key year for the global PV market with a number of keep occurrences. Germany’s market did not fall apart as predicted with a reduction in subsidies. The long history of the local market ensured it did not collapse. The same cannot be said for Spain where the gold rush prospectors found themselves with too many plans and product without an appropriate market causing companies to rush to new opportunities with little planning. Other countries are waiting to see what comes from the changes to their subsidy packages.
The biggest market news was the increasing strength of new and emerging markets. China is the key region for both manufacturing and market with growth exceeding expectations. The USA began to move towards a renewable future and the PV industry has benefited from the fast growth there. The UK has seen huge expectations with the growth associated with the introduction of their FiT programme. India seems to have completely transformed their semiconductor goals of the last few years to a concerted assault on the PV market and manufacturing. Many other countries are beginning subsidies for PV contributing to the increasing global market.
Despite all the positive growth there is still a concern that the industry as a whole is doing itself no favours by allowing new markets to be flooded with poor workmanship and products which continues to undermine the public perception of the industry. The industry needs to provide more advice to emerging markets and new FiT schemes to ensure a positive perception of the industry as a whole. There are too many examples of markets around the world flooded with unprepared and untrained companies rushing in only to leave such a poor perception as to stagnate the continued growth of the industry as a whole.
