BETT 2011
BETT subject guide
In December, the SecEd BETT 2011 Show Guide looked at what the show has to offer specific disciplines – including heads of ICT, leadership and SEN. Now we turn our focus to a range of classroom subjects and look at what exhibitors and seminars BETT offers for teachers in these areas
Design and Technology
Keep I.T. Easy This exhibitor is demonstrating the latest version of its control and robotics software, Flowol 4. Flowol allows students to create programs visually on the computer by dragging and dropping flowchart symbols onto the screen. The programs can control real control system models (a big wheel, lighthouse and lift), or floor robots via control boxes and microcontrollers. Flowol can also control mimics, on-screen simulations of control systems, using 2D, or 3D animated graphics (stand P49).
Serif Serif provides a creative solution for ICT across the curriculum, with graphics software tools and support. The Serif Design Suite aims to help students to develop their design skills to prepare for the competitive workplace. To prove just how professional their designs can be, Serif has been working with Nottingham Bluecoat School whose students have been busy designing marketing materials for the stand (stand K36).
LJ Create LJ Create develops educational resources that address science, technology and engineering and offer hands- on activities and computer-based lesson materials and simulations. Two new teaching resources aim to help educate students about green issues and how technology is helping to contribute to the future of sustainable energy. The Green Construction and Sustainable Energy modules provide a blend of presentations, practical exploration and interactive lessons with learning platform delivery opportunities (stand D66).
Q4 Technologies Q4 is launching the Go-Robo Programmer designed in collaboration with a NASA robotics physicist and a consultant for the Nottingham e-Learning Centre to teach students the concepts of writing software programmes. This application is an out-of-the-box “Plug & Play” solution which provides teachers with a system for introducing two of the hardest subjects to – teach robotics and control technology (stand Y15).
Music
XMA Visitors to XMA can witness the enthusiasm and sense of achievement that young people experience when learning to play on Apple’s GarageBand software
12
application. On Wednesday, January 12, pupils from a leading academy will join Ben Ottewell, former singer and guitarist with the band Gomez, as he puts them through their paces with a GarageBand tutorial and jam session which will culminate with them recording their own track (stand C100).
SkoogMusic SkoogMusic is showcasing a new musical instrument, The Skoog. This colourful squeezy cube is sensitive to touch and allows children with additional support needs at all levels of the curriculum to play and engage in music in an expressive and intuitive way. The 12 instrument sounds can be personalised through a variety of options such as volume, threshold and skill- setting. Users can edit the musical scale of the entire Skoog and alter the tuning of notes allocated to each of its sides. The software features midi compatibility, and a drag and drop sampler so that audio clips can be triggered from the Skoog’s surfaces (stand SN9).
Seminars On Friday, January 14 (10.45am in the Innovation Theatre), Brandon LePage, head of Lambeth Music Service, is holding a seminar entitled Music Transforms Children’s Lives, looking at the online benefits delivered by the authority’s “In Harmony” project. In Harmony is an innovative approach to social uplift through music, based on the global success of Venezuela’s El Sistema, where evidence shows how street children’s lives are being transformed through music education. Attendees will learn to recognise how creative use of their managed learning environment can empower hard-to- reach children to narrow the achievement gap.
History and geography
Uffington White Horse Society for the Study of British History and Culture The Society is making a return to BETT for the 10th consecutive year. Visitors can see recent additions to the critically acclaimed multimedia series BritPast:Vignettes From The History And Culture Of An Ancient Civilization and try their hand at a challenging quiz to see how much they know about England’s remarkable ancient past. The software is for key stages 1 to 3 history classes. A 20 per cent discount will also be available on stand for BETT visitors (stand SW100).
Eye2eye Software The new Eye2eye Britain from Eye2eye Software maps out the whole of Britain with over 1,600 panoramas
and 10,900 photos. With an interactive whiteboard users can view mountain summits, beaches, the inside of factories, Parliament, heritage sites and many more. Designed for geography lessons, pupils can use images to support their projects at school or at home. All images are legally licensed and ideal topics covered include Investigating Coast, River Studies, Mountains, Settlements, Limestone Landscapes, Glacial Erosion, Coastal Erosion, Land Use, and Industry, to name just a few (stand SW98).
Twig Twig uses prime documentary footage to create films that engage children with visuals, upbeat music and original scripts to reinforce key learning points for geography in addition to science disciplines. Its content is designed to meet the needs of the curriculum from key stage 2 through to GCSE and is researched by academics to ensure accuracy (stand T14).
Languages
GrowStoryGrow Stories written in a foreign language can be overwhelming for the learner and difficult to integrate into a lesson for the teacher. GrowStoryGrow is exhibiting its library of stories that are simple and written with the language learner in mind. The strength of GrowStoryGrow is that it is backed up with a wealth of materials that can integrate easily into day-to-day cross-curricular lessons. Users have access to hundreds of stories in French, English, Spanish, Italian and German with Polish, Mandarin, Russian and Portuguese coming very soon (stand SW74).
Activa Education Activa is showcasing its new, flexible language learning solutions. One of these is ReLANpro Voyager which has been designed for language departments who find it difficult to get access to ICT suites. As a wireless language teaching solution mounted on a trolley system with netbooks and an N level wireless router, Voyager means a language lab travels to where it is most needed (stand N68).
PSHE
Serious Games Interactive Global Conflicts is an award-winning educational game series which can be used for teaching citizenship. Last year, Global Conflicts: Palestine received a BETT Award. This year, Serious Games Interactive is
showcasing the newest addition to the series – Global Conflicts: Afghanistan. In this episode, students take a trip to a small rural village in the heart of Afghanistan. A school has been attacked and burned, a teacher beaten, and the pupils threatened. It is up to you to find out what has happened, who is responsible, and what can be done about it (stand U44).
Smart Learning Visitors can meet with Smart Learning, creators of resources for primary and secondary schools including content for PSHE lessons. Smart Learning’s teaching resources include award-winning interactive software and learning platform content (stand K68).
