Venerable family-owned paddle manufac- turer Lendal has sold its business to John- son Outdoors. Johnson’s $380 million per year outdoor empire includes paddle- sports brands Necky, Ocean Kayak, Old Town, Extrasport, and Carlisle Paddles. “Our vision is to own the outdoor ad- venture [market], with a clear focus on sustainable growth through continuous innovation and strategic, targeted acquisi- tions,” said Johnson chief Helen Johnson- Leipold. “Lendal is a perfect complement to round out our paddle portfolio: an elite brand with a unique and meaningful point-of-difference, and a strong potential for growth by leveraging our global distri- bution network and marketing strength.” Whew! And we thought they were just nice paddles. Lendal’s founder, Alistair Wilson, will stay on with Johnson to do design and promotion.
