USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2011 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP DATES
USA Triathlon has finalized the dates and sites for what is sure to be an exciting 2011 National Championship schedule — one that will give America’s top multisport athletes the chance to pursue national titles at 13 National Championship events in 10 coast-to-coast cities.

Sold-out events and record-setting fields marked the 2010 USA Triathlon National Championship season, which featured the only events in which athletes can earn official National Champion status.

“USA Triathlon has assembled an outstanding National Championship lineup for 2011, which provides our members with a number of challenging venues at which they can pursue the dream of becoming a national champion,” said USA Triathlon Director of National Events Jeff Dyrek. “We hosted the nation’s finest multisport athletes at each of our events in 2010, and we look forward to further exceeding the national championship experience in 2011.”

Ten cities will host 2011 USAT National Championships: Midway, Utah; Birmingham, Ala.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Tucson/Oro Valley, Ariz.; Longmont, Colo.; San Diego, Calif.; New York, N.Y.; Burlington, Vt.; Ogden, Utah; and Myrtle Beach, S.C

Highlighting the schedule are the USA Triathlon Age Group and Sprint National Championships, which will be held Aug. 20, in Burlington, Vt. The course is expected to take athletes through Lake Champlain and Battery Park for both the 2011 and 2012 events. Nearly 1,700 athletes completed the events over the course of two days this year in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Tuscaloosa will host a major triathlon championship for the fifth consecutive year on April 9, 2011, when the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship returns for the first time since 2008. The nation’s top college athletes will compete on an Olympic-distance course similar to the one used at this year’s Age Group Nationals. A sprint event also will be offered for the second straight year.

After reaching record numbers in recent years in Richmond, Va., USA Triathlon’s Duathlon National Championship will head west to Tucson, Ariz., on April 30, 2011. This event will feature age group and elite on-road duathlon championships, as well as an off-road event. The Junior and Youth National Championships will return to San Diego for a second consecutive year on Aug. 6, 2011.

QUALIFIERS ADDED FOR ITU LONG DISTANCE WORLDS
USA Triathlon has added two additional qualifying events for Team USA for the 2011 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championship on Nov. 5, 2011, in Henderson, Nev. — the 2011 Wildflower Triathlon and the 2011 Pigman Long Course Triathlon

“Due to the effects of inclement weather prior to the 2010 USA Triathlon Long Course Triathlon National Championship in Myrtle Beach the dynamics of the initial qualifying event unfortunately were altered,” said USA Triathlon National Events Director Jeff Dyrek. “With the world championship taking place on U.S. soil, USA Triathlon wanted to give American athletes another opportunity to qualify for Team USA and represent their country on the world stage.”

At both events, the top five finishers in each age group (rolling down to 10th place) will earn a coveted Team USA spot. All spots earned in Myrtle Beach also will be honored.
