WAVES

Major bad news as we went to press was that BBC London 94.9 are planning to axe DJ Ritu’s A World In London show at New Year. With her unique live mix of interviews with artists from around the world, a chance to hear the latest world music releases, diary of upcoming events and more, it’s a community notice board, catalyst and meeting place for music made by all cultures in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Occupying the slot previously held for many years by the late Charlie Gillett, Ritu’s not only fulfilling a role that is simply not being addressed anywhere else on the airwaves, but doing so in a truly excellent and entertaining manner – there are few better examples of programmes that so perfectly fit the BBC’s public service

broadcasting remit while doing so on a virtually negligible budget. We recommend joining the Facebook campaign to prevent its closure. And in another blow to Charlie Gillett’s legacy, the BBC World Service are planning to axe Mark Coles’ programme which took over Charlie’s role on that station in March.

On the good news side, January sees the long-awaited return to the airwaves of Andy Kershaw. Along with Lucy Duran he’s hosting BBC Radio 3’s new 8-part documentary series Music Planet which will broadcast on Thursday evenings from 13th January immediately after BBC TV’s new Natural History series Human Planet – www.bbc.co.uk/ humanplanet – uncovering the music from the same areas. They’ll then be repeated in the Saturday 3pm World Routes slot two days later. Themes of the programmes
