Teachers in Wales

Issue 37 Autumn term 2010
From the NUT for all teachers in Wales

At the heart of power

An NUT delegation met the Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, Leighton Andrews, at Ty Hywel in Cardiff Bay, on 28 September. NUT Cymru Secretary David Evans described their talks as “very positive in almost every area discussed”.

David, with NUT Executive members for Wales Neil Foden, Angela Davies and Beth Davies, and NUT Cymru Principal Officer Stuart Williams, discussed several key issues, including funding, the School Effectiveness Framework and supply teachers.

The minister confirmed the Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to closing the gap in per capita funding between Welsh and English pupils (see page 2). He also showed understanding about the plight of supply teachers and pledged to look into the issue.

The delegation raised concern about teacher unions’ exclusion from the second stage of the Public Spending Review. The NUT was consequently invited to prepare written submissions for consideration.

Welcome to the NUT!

NUT Cymru visited all the Welsh universities at the start of this term, recruiting new student teachers to the Union. Pictured above are Steffan ap Dafydd, Swansea NUT Division Secretary, and Glesni Jones, Principal Officer, NUT Cymru (on the right), with Anna Deeks (centre left) and Sarah Francis, two new members at Swansea Metropolitan University.

Student membership of the NUT is free, and newly qualified teachers can get four terms’ full membership for just £1. Find out more about both offers at www.teachers.org.uk.

What can we do for you?

As well as recruiting student teachers, NUT Cymru has secured the services of five student bursars:

• Carys Lawrence (right) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth

• Sarah Conway at UWIC, Cardiff

• Beth Lewis at Bangor University

• Louise Brown at Swansea Metropolitan University

• Daniel Haman at Trinity College, Carmarthen.

Each has set up a student teacher society at their university and will be organising regular events to help student NUT members with their studies and offer them professional development – for example practice interviews and assistance with application letters.

If you’d like to get in touch with Carys, Sarah, Beth, Louise or Daniel, email cymru.wales@nut.org.uk.
