Making reliable connections

n Germany, Cassidian – the new name of EADS Defence & Security – has been

commissioned by Berlin’s IT service centre to link the State of Berlin’s 28 control centres to the national public safety digital radio network (BDBOS). The link, via two data concentrators,

will make the control stations’ access to the TETRA digital radio network as cost- effective and manufacturer-independent as possible. Berlin is the first federal state to commission such a system. A special feature will be high availability:

should one of the concentrators fail, the linked-up control stations and TETRA groups will be automatically re-routed via a second location to ensure almost uninterrupted operation. Cassidian is also supplying a powerful

network management system which provides a full overview of the operational status of all system components of the concentrator system.

Also playing a key role in setting up the network was MCS Electronics, the country’s second largest mobile operator. Teltronic supplied the complete TETRA system, including multi-site infrastructure,

mobile units and handheld radios. A second phase of construction, to be undertaken in the near future, will bring increased coverage of the capital, Ulan Bator, and other cities across Mongolia.

Radio support for a Papal visit

able to enjoy complete radio coverage across a large geographical area without loss of voice quality.Te occasion also demonstrated that the Airwave service can provide full nationwide interoperability for the British Red Cross, offering the flexibility it needs to handle large-scale events wherever they may occur in Britain. With the aid of the Airwave service, the

‘silver command’ team of the British Red Cross was able to manage efficiently all vehicles, staff and welfare centres involved in providing first aid services to 100000 people within a 65km radius, culminating in an open-air Mass at Bellahouston Park. deployment in Glasgow in time for the papal visit, Airwave allowed us to gain a good understanding of how its service performs during large-scale operations”, commented Brian Everard, implementation adviser at the British Red Cross. “Te network operated perfectly on the day and demonstrated the benefits we look forward to enjoying once the nationwide rollout is complete: interoperability, scalability, ease of use and, above all, operational efficiency.”
