NEWS FROM THE PADDLING WORLD
VHF
Peter Marcus (Feb. 20, 1955–Jan. 11, 2008) Tis January the kayaking community lost one of its most valued members. Peter Mar- cus (pictured above), founder and co-owner of Gabriola Cycle and Kayak Outfitters, co- founder of Wavelength magazine, founding member of the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of B.C., father, husband, brother, and friend to many, died peacefully at home following a brief illness. Peter was a prime mover in the West Coast paddling and cycling scenes and a true original. He will be greatly missed. Peter’s wife and business partner, Ana, continues to offer cycling trips.

The Nine Lives of Pi Last November, a kayaker in Nelson, B.C., found and rescued a very hungry tabby cat that was stranded on a small rock partway down a cliff. Te cat, Pi, was reunited with its owners, who said it had been missing for 26 days.—TS
Be Careful What You Fish For Last December, kayakers Daniel Pennington and Dean Woodgate were towing fishing lures near New Zealand’s Great Barrier Island when they became fishing lures in the eyes of a two- metre shark. “Dean saw this fin come up be- hind my rudder, just like you see in Jaws,” said Pennington. Sensing a fisher–fishee reversal, the pair paddled the hell out of there.—TS
The Hoffmeister Targets Oz After record-speed circumnavigations of Ice- land and New Zealand’s South Island, uber- kayaker Freya Hoffmeister plans to circle Australia this winter. She would be the only kayaker to do so since Paul Caffyn 25 years ago—and the first without land support. Chal- lenges include vicious crocodiles in the north. Judy Blight, president of the Sea Kayak Club of Western Australia, tells us that “Since Paul Caffyn did his epic trip the crocodiles have not been culled so it is virtually impossible to do it alone across the top.”—TS
