Holocaust education

Teaching children and young people about the Holocaust can be a challenge for even the most experienced teacher but one NASUWT member spent part of her summer break getting a practical guide.
Vicki Francis was one of 23 British teachers who embarked on a ten-day trip to Israel, organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET), to learn how to deliver effective Holocaust education in their schools.
Based at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem, the group of teachers attended lectures and workshops led by some of the world’s leading Holocaust academics and heard testimonies from two Holocaust survivors.
There was also a strong pedagogical element to the trip, with participants attending a seminar prior to the trip followed by a series of workshops while in Israel from HET educators on integrating Holocaust education within the curriculum. The group will reunite next month to reflect on what they have learnt and explore how to apply this knowledge in their classroom.
Vicki, who is assistant head of humanities at Magnus Church of England School in Nottinghamshire, said: “The course gave me real insight into ways of teaching the Holocaust and a wealth of inspiration that will enable me to more effectively tackle what is a hugely challenging subject in the classroom. I have come away with ideas and resources for both my Year 9 and Year 13 courses.
“The Holocaust has always held a profound fascination for me and I have endeavoured to teach it effectively. After completing this course I feel more confident, with a renewed urge to learn more about the Holocaust.”
