Student art work gets Gove’s seal of approval
by Daniel White
An award-winning piece of student art work is to take pride of place in education minister Michael Gove’s Westminster office. The piece, entitled Human
Diversity, was created by Mairead Flannery, a year 10 pupil from Redhill School in Stourbridge, and hand-picked by Mr Gove as win- ner of the national Arts and Minds competition. Run by the NASUWT, Arts and Minds is an art and creative
writing competition that challenges students from across primary, sec- ondary and special schools to sub- mit entries that celebrate cultural diversity and racial equality. Mairead’s piece won the indi-
vidual artwork award in the sec- ondary school category and also took the overall prize, staving off competition from more than 1,000 entrants. Mairead collected her prize
from schools minister Nick Gibb at a ceremony in central London last week. Both Mr Gibb and Mr Gove were involved in selecting
her work as the overall winner of the competition. Mr Gove, who was unable to
attend the ceremony, described it as an “amazing piece of art”. He said: “This is a striking
image and very impressive – totally professional in quality and execu- tion. The artist is using an arrest- ing image to make us think about human diversity. It is beautiful and thought-provoking and goes to the heart of what Arts and Minds is about.” At the ceremony, Mr Gibb
revealed that Mr Gove had asked if the piece could be hung in his office at the Department for Education’s headquarters. After picking up her prize,
Mairead described to SecEd how she created the piece: “I had the image in my head, and kept going back to it. I spent weeks on it. “I did some research on rac-
ism and how terrible it is. I want- ed to get people thinking about it and how diversity and equality is important.” Elsewhere at the awards, there
were two other winners in the sec- ondary category, both from King Edward VI High School for Girls in Birmingham. Year 8 student Chloe Murphy
won with her painting Hand In Hand We Stand. She said: “I was trying to show the cultural diversity and how it’s changed, and how the world needs to become a better place, in diverse communities.” Year 10 student Sara Lo Polito

won the creative writing section of the competition with a written diary called There’s a Difference. The piece was inspired by Anne Frank’s diary. She said: “It is important to express what you think and the way people view things.” In the special schools category,
