After a decade-long facelift the elegant marble temple of Athena Nike (Victorious Athena) stands free of scaffolding. The first Ionic structure to be built on the Acropolis (begun around 427 BC) was an expression of Athenians’ ambitions to defeat Sparta and become world power.
