nce again, with the support of Arts Coun- cil England, we are proud to put a maga-
zine with another state-of-the- art Looking For A New England compilation into all the dele- gate bags at Womex and the AFO conference. Last year’s CD showcased young performers taking English traditional music in new directions. This year’s highlights wonderful musicians
from other traditions now resident here and contributing to our cultural richness, as others have done down the cen- turies. And though I say so myself, it’s really impressive, in fact I’d go so far as to say that once again you’d have diffi- culty finding another similar compilation as good for twice the price, let alone with a 100 page magazine attached!

the 2010 Womex Award for “professional excellence”, the- first time they have recognised the print media. I’m not sure if I get to make a speech, but if I do it’ll surely ramble on about why print magazines are such a vital part of an underground music’s ecosystem and are disregarded at great cost to other links in the chain; about the irreplace- able service that they have provided down the years; about how the feel, smell and pleasure of reading a printed mag- azine can no more be replaced by staring at a flat illuminat- ed screen than a well cooked and presented meal can be substituted by dried ration packs and vitamin tablets; about how the best magazines become a community of enthusi- asts, a direct bond between the readers and the music, a clear glue that holds everything together and a catalyst for pleasure, discovery, appreciation and careers that nothing else can provide. And about then a long pole with a hook on the end will appear and tug me off…

They say that nostalgia’s not what it used to be, but the Ghosts From The Basement day we helped mount at Cecil Sharp House in September was pretty life affirming, mixing up long-lost artists and friends from 40 years ago with a young generation of musicians and writers, some of whom hadn’t even been born in the former’s heyday. A photo- spread by Ms Burrows next issue, methinks, and Spiral Earth filmed the day so expect a documentary. Meanwhile, in the here and now, next issue – out early December – will of course have the annual fRoots Poll results, the Folk Awards nominees and another fRoots CD too. Be patient!
