Software package for geoscientists

Golden Software has released Strater 2, an upgrade of its well log and borehole plotting software package for geoscientists. Strater 2 enables users to quickly create professional well logs from any type of interval or depth data. Strater 2 supports 12 popular log types to display subsurface data graphically: bar, zone bar, percentage, graphic, well construction, lithology, post, classed post, complex text, line/ symbol, crossplot, and depth logs. Strater 2 offers a multitude of new customisation options, some of which include drawing or importing objects into the log area, specifying new colours and patterns, generating legends, setting decimal digits or adding a suffix/prefix to numeric labels, using one of the two new methods to adjust the scale of logs, and specifying transparency levels.

The improved data tables increase efficiency when working with data. The new data tables operate intuitively like Excel worksheets and support data from many common sources, including the current Access 2007 ACCDB and Excel 2007 XLSX formats. One of the most popular new features in Strater 2 is the ability to display logs for multiple boreholes in one view to visually compare the data. Users can also draw lines connecting logs from the different boreholes to see correlations, and insert text to describe the correlations or emphasise specific data. Additional information may be

Teaching aid for maths students

Maplesoft has released the latest version of its Maple T.A. (teaching and assessment) MAA placement test suite. The placement test suite is a collection of placement tests that are developed by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and offered online exclusively through the Maple T.A. testing environment. The latest release of the

Maple T.A. MAA placement test suite incorporates the results of modern research into calculus assessment. A new calculus concepts readiness test determines if a student has a good understanding of the mathematical concepts needed to succeed in a calculus course.

For immersive 3D visualisation Mechdyne has released its new ACE Dual-View product, allowing the production of two distinct user perspectives from a single 3D digital projector. By using the Dual-View technology, two people working in an immersive stereoscopic environment can see a different view of 3D images and, since both viewers are separately motion-tracked, the images they see as they explore and interact are unique to their view. This enables more natural discussion when viewing virtual prototypes or navigating virtual scenes. Furthermore, Mechdyne’s software will allow for each user to see the other user’s position and orientation relative to the virtual world and the objects it contains.

The first customer for an ACE (which stands for ‘Advanced Collaborative Environment’) Dual-View-capable system is a US University, which will use

the technology in conjunction with a CAVE automated virtual environment, designed and integrated by Mechdyne. According to the company, potential applications in engineering include the design of an automobile interiors; two designers can view the simulation from different positions within the virtual image. Additional applications exist in surgical simulations, in which an experienced practitioner may be observing or instructing a student in new techniques. The Dual-View technology can be incorporated into any of Mechdyne’s projection-based 3D visual environments, including CAVE and FLEX immersive displays, single and multi-projector PowerWalls, PLEX, portable ROVR systems and custom display configurations. www.mechdyne.com

BIOINFORMATICS

Solution for DNA and RNA sequencing data CLC bio and PSSC Labs have developed CLC Genomics Factory,

for assembly, read mapping, and subsequent downstream analysis of very large amounts of high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing data. Built as a high-performance bioinformatics appliance, CLC Genomics Factory comes in three different sizes with varying numbers of compute nodes, capable of processing the data output from up to 10 Illumina HiSeq2000 or 7 Life Technologies SOLiD 4 systems. CLC Genomics Factory is built around CLC bio’s enterprise platform, including the award- winning CLC Genomics Server, as well as all of CLC bio’s accelerated algorithms for full-genome assembly and analysis. Multiple licenses for CLC Genomics Workbench enable users to interface with the server software through either a user- friendly graphical user interface or, optionally, a command line interface. CLC Genomics Factory includes support for CLC bio’s Software Developer Kit, for those wishing to integrate third-party systems and software. CLC Genomics Factory includes a master node, multiple job nodes, as well as varying amount of storage. www.clcfactory.com

Industrial biotechnology data solution Genedata has introduced its Selector system for managing biotechnological strain development in fermentation-based applications. According to the company, Selector is an integrated data management and analysis system specifically for industrial biotechnology R&D. It supports industrial biotechnology production of feed and food additives, fine chemicals, biofuels, and personal care, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical products. The company believes that

industrial biotech R&D differs from pharmaceutical R&D in that it requires more flexible and dynamic computational solutions, combining, for example,
