THE CURRICULUM
One-third of your coursework—12 courses—will be in the humanities, social sciences and the arts, starting with an intensive introduction to writing and revising, textual analysis and critical thinking in your first year. And every HMC student pursues a concentration in the humanities, social sciences and the arts—at least four courses, including advanced work, grouped around a theme or in a specific field. The remainder of your coursework is designed to give you broad exposure to a range of disciplines and ways of thinking—and to allow you the freedom to explore your interests in depth. We encourage students to choose courses that expose them to different cultures and histories and to pursue study abroad. Take note we don’t offer majors in the humanities, social sciences and the arts. You can, however, complete a major at another undergraduate college in The Claremont Colleges—an option typically used as a double major in addition to one of HMC’s technical majors.

THE PROGRAM
We’re an essential part of an HMC educa- tion. We are active scholars and researchers, dedicated and creative teachers. We serve the entire student body; we’re the college’s second largest department; we constitute a major portion of the curriculum. But, more to the point, we’re integral to the college’s mis- sion. The work you’ll do in our program will help you to become a bold, broad-minded, self-aware, socially engaged citizen and
scholar—an evolving, reasoning, enlightened human being. The college believes that this education and these skills are the foundation of a meaningful life in the sciences and beyond.
