David Herold. Mary Surratt, who ran a boarding house in DC at the time, was hanged for her supposed role in the plot. Stop there for a guided tour that highlights life in the 19th-century tavern. T e trail leads to Dr Samuel Mudd Road, named after the doctor who, not knowing about the assassination, set Booth’s leg and let him rest in his house. Mudd was later arrested and imprisoned. T e museum and gift shop are open to the public.
After a brief stay in the home of Colonel Samuel Cox – a
Southern sympathiser – in Rich Hill, Booth and Herold spent several days in the area hidden in a pine thicket, waiting to cross the Potomac River into Virginia.
