iemens’ Answers for the Environment event, held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, offered the chance for more than 1,800 industry experts, OEMs, solutions providers, contractors and consultants to hear how the com- pany tackles some of toughest issues facing indus- try today. With about 80% of the world’s greenhouse gases produced by cities, the event’s Sustainable Cities exhibition zone featured the technologies we might see deployed in urban centres in the future, including the Green Building Monitor which regularly tracks energy use in buildings, as
well as CO2 reduction and waste targets. Elsewhere in the zone, the latest extra low-voltage LED traffic lights and the next generation com- muter trains – the Desiro City – were on display. On the over side of the exhibition space, which was magnificently illuminated by giant balls of low-energy light, the Answers for Industry zone offered a glimpse of some of the innovative tech- nologies that Siemens has been working on to help companies maximise productivity, cut costs and ensure environmental compliance. Key exhibits included high efficiency drive systems that can achieve up to 70% of energy savings in

industrial applications and water filtration tech- nologies capable of reducing industrial waste- water by 90%.
As a central focus of the two-day event, 25 seminars tackled technology, best practice and emerging trends in the areas of energy efficiency in manufacturing and sustainability in cities. Juergen Maier, managing director of the Industry Sector at Siemens UK, said he was “delighted” by the level of attendance. “This event shows that many of the technologies need- ed to dramatically reduce the energy used within industry and infrastructure are already available today. With support from organisations like the Carbon Trust and the right encouragement from government, investment in technologies which enable businesses to become more operationally and energy efficient could start making a real dif- ferent to CO2 emissions.
“And above all, many of these technologies offer a rapid return on investment, ensuring prof- itability alongside environmental responsibility.” To find out more about what happened at Answers for the Environment, or to download any of the seminar presentations, visit
