northeastern tip of the Isle of Palms from J.C. Long. First named the Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club, today it is known as Wild Dunes. Official talk of a road from Mount
Pleasant to the Isle of Palms began in 1973 when local, state and federal agencies met to discuss improving traffic service to the islands. Debate con- tinued through 1977, with citizens and state and federal representa- tives discussing the economic, residential and environmental effects and connecting the Isle of Palms to the mainland. In the spring of 1985, the Isle of Palms airstrip was purchased by Wild Dunes and
became part of a golf course. Disaster visited the Isle of Palms
on Sept. 22, 1989, when the eye of Hurricane Hugo passed directly over the island. More than 95 percent of

Following Hurricane Hugo, the city launched a capital improvement plan that called for the construction of a new municipal building for the Police Department and City Hall, two new fire stations and a public works building. On Oct. 2, 1993,
