Pleasant to the Isle of Palms began in 1973 when local, state and federal agencies met to discuss improving traffic service to the islands. Debate con- tinued through 1977, with citizens and state and federal representa- tives discussing the economic, residential and environmental effects and connecting the Isle of Palms to the mainland. In the spring of 1985, the Isle of Palms airstrip was purchased by Wild Dunes and


became part of a golf course. Disaster visited the Isle of Palms


on Sept. 22, 1989, when the eye of Hurricane Hugo passed directly over the island. More than 95 percent of


lies were evacuated. Property damage was estimated at $100 million. Following Hurricane Hugo, the city launched a capital improvement plan that called for the construction of a new municipal building for the Police Department and City Hall, two new fire stations and a public works building. On Oct. 2, 1993,


the Isle of Palms Connector was opened as the first fixed-span bridge to link the Isle of Palms directly to the mainland. Te island’s first stoplight, at the mouth of the Connector, still acts as the gateway to Mount
