CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE
RAYS 3, YANKEES 2 Wade Davis pitched seven
innings and Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer to lead surg- ing Tampa Bay over New York at home. Alex Rodriguez failed to hit his 600th home run, going 0 for 4. The Rays pulled within one game of the AL East-lead- ing Yankees with their 11th win in 12 home games.
Joyce’s homer with two outs in the sixth ruined an other- wise outstanding performance by New York’s Phil Hughes. A moment of silence was ob-
served before the game for George Steinbrenner, the long- time Yankees owner and Tam- pa resident who died of a heart attack on July 13. New York

Capps, acquired from the
Washington Nationals the pre- vious night, gave up a two-out single to Chone Figgins before striking out Casey Kotchman, ending the game with a pump of his fist. Of 94 career saves by Capps, he has 11 against AL teams. The Twins’ Jim Thome and

NOTEBOOK
Arizona’s rebuild continues as White Sox trade for Jackson
associated press
The Arizona Diamondbacks traded away an all-star pitcher for the second time in a week, sending right-hander Edwin Jack- son to the Chicago White Sox on Friday for rookie Daniel Hudson and prospect David Holmberg.
Arizona shipped three-time all-star Dan
Haren to the Los Angeles Angels for left- hander Joe Saunders and three other play- ers last week. The last-place Diamondbacks continued their rebuilding project by moving Jack- son, an all-star in 2009 who tossed the sec- ond no-hitter in franchise history June 25 against Tampa Bay. Arizona’s purge gives Chicago a solid ad- dition to its rotation, which is missing in- jured right-hander Jake Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner. The White Sox be- gan the day with a 11
⁄2 -game lead in the AL
Central over Minnesota. Jackson was 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA in 21
starts for the Diamondbacks this year, coming off an all-star season in which he went 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 33 starts cov- ering 214 innings for Detroit.
Yankees nearing Berkman deal The New York Yankees expect to acquire
Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros on Saturday and already worked out a deal to obtain outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians.
New York will send a couple of prospects to the Astros, a baseball executive familiar with the discussions said. The executive spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing. “Nothing’s been completed,” Berkman
said Friday in Houston, before the Astros played Milwaukee. A five-time all-star, Berkman has full no-
trade rights and his approval was neces- sary for a trade. He was not in the starting lineup against the Brewers. “I’m from Texas. Heck, I played at Rice.
This city is like the womb. I feel very com- fortable here. To think about the possibil- ity of going anywhere else is kind of scary,” Berkman said. Kearns left Cleveland’s game at Toronto in the seventh inning on Friday night, and was traded to the Yankees for a player to be named or cash. The former first-round draft pick is hitting .272 with eight home runs and 42 RBI.
Berkman appeared to be the more sig-
nificant acquisition. “My ideal situation is to win a title here. If this organization feels those aims are better accomplished by trying to strip down this roster and reload with younger guys, I don’t want to stand in the way of that,” Berkman said. “If they approached me with something that made sense, I’d sure think about it.” The 34-year-old Berk- man began Friday hitting .245 with 13 home runs and 49 RBI. He has 60 walks and 70 strikeouts in 298 at-bats.
