The government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave guidance and support in 1,682 reported cases of forced marriage in 2009. However, it is feared that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Schools play a vital role in spotting the signs that students might be in danger of forced marriage and often it is the actions of a teacher which has saved innocent teenagers from this violent and shocking fate. Now, a new resource is offering support to teachers by giving them advice on what to do if they have concerns and where to turn for support – advice that could save lives.
Turn to pages 8 and 9 for more on Rumi’s story and an in-depth look at this shocking issue.
