PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

A Student Timeline

The following is a helpful guide for students and parents that define specific goals and actions that can be taken to ensure a successful transition to a college or university education.

7th Grade

• Begin thinking about what lies ahead in high school. • Start good habits now. Plan and organize your homework and study time. • Talk to friends and family about their high school experiences and their careers. • Work hard to keep your grades up – it really does matter.

• Participate in programs, camps, competitions, and anything offering leadership opportunities.

• Begin to think about career areas that may be of interest to you. What are you good at? How do you spend your time? How does it relate to possible career interests?

• Find out about the PSAT and begin the process of SAT or ACT preparation by learning new words, reviewing math, and improving your critical thinking skills.

8th Grade

• Begin thinking about the high school classes that will pre- pare you for college. Take the most difficult classes you can handle and try to see the big picture in what you learn.

• Seek help if you need to improve your study habits or a particular subject. • Practice setting and reaching goals. • Volunteer in your community; it is great experience, and you will meet people. • Take interest and skills assessments to help you think about possible career options. • Talk with your school counselor and family about careers that interest you. • Enroll in a summer enrichment program.

• Get a guide book and consider taking SAT or ACT prep classes and the exam for practice. Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8  |  Page 9  |  Page 10  |  Page 11  |  Page 12
