Youth Music Theatre (YMT) UK was delighted to recently announce that the NASUWT has become its headline sponsor.

The partnership between YMT and the NASUWT began in 2007 and has grown to include teaching resources, chaperoning opportunities and performances at Annual Conference.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “The NASUWT is extremely committed to causes that benefit, support and celebrate the talents of young people. We have been developing a relationship with YMT over a number of years. YMT is an extremely valuable resource for teachers and schools, providing the highest quality productions and development opportunities. We are very proud to be the main sponsor of YMT.”

There are a number of ways Union members can benefit from the partnership:

• YMT welcomes applications from NASUWT members for chaperoning positions over the summer. Last year, Jennifer Adams Barrett spent three weeks working on YMT’s production of A Winter’s Tale in Guildford, Surrey. She said: “Overall, the experience was amazing. I was initially concerned about being away from home for so long and thought I’d regret missing three weeks of my six-week holiday, but there wasn’t time to miss anything.

“The experience of sitting in the theatre and watching the young people who you’d spent the last few weeks of your life getting to know, creating such an incredible, professional performance, was unmissable. It was amazing to see some of the young people really challenged and coming out of their shells as the weeks went on.”

Teachers interested in chaperoning for YMT’s 2010 productions should contact Paul Byrne at paulbyrne@ymtuk.org.

• In 2008, YMT and the NASUWT worked together to produce a creative teaching resource focused on the personal, social and health education (PSHE) curriculum. The resource uses scenes from YMT’s production Missing Mel to explore themes of bullying, stress at school and growing up. DVD clips and excerpts from the script accompany four lesson plans, which can be downloaded from both the YMT and NASUWT websites. For more information, go to www.youthmusictheatreuk.org/education.

• To celebrate the NASUWT becoming the principal sponsor of YMT, NASUWT members can receive a discount of £50 if bookinese week-long residential courses are for 11-21 year olds who are interested in working with professional artistic staff to develop a new musical. With the discount, the courses costs £375.

Cymru President at Number 10

The President of NASUWT Cymru was among 150 outstanding school leaders invited to a Downing Street reception hosted by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

John Tobutt, headteacher of Gabalfa Primary School in Cardiff, was selected to attend the event for school leaders who have made a significant contribution towards education in their community. Mr Tobutt, who is this year’s President of NASUWT Cymru and treasurer of Cardiff Local Association, was invited to the reception following a visit to his school by Julie Morgan, former MP for Cardiff North, and Harriet Harman, Acting Leader of the Labour Party.

The visitors were impressed by the results of the school’s recent Estyn inspection, which highlighted the ‘outstanding progress’ made by the school and the contribution Mr Tobutt has made to achieving these improvements. Speaking after his visit, Mr Tobutt said:

“It was a real honour and a privilege to be invited to Downing Street and to meet so many other inspirational school leaders. “It is huge recognition for the hard work that has been put in, not only by me, but also by the staff and pupils in making the school a real success. “It was very nice to hear a politician Julie Morgan looks on as Gordon Brown congratulates John Tobutt congratulating headteachers and acknowledging the commitment and dedication we have to our profession.”
