Champion for the environment

W

ITH environmental stewardship as one of its major advocacies, the Meralco Development Center (MMLDC) bagged the “Grandmaster” title and was hailed as “Champion in Reduction” in the recently concluded Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO). The prestigious competition bestowed its highest honor to MMLDC for its “excellent Earth-friendly operations and practices.”

“We are very honored that we

were cited for our contributions to Mother Earth. With this success, MMLDC reaffirms its

commitment to the environment. We will further boost projects that promote the welfare of our planet, and espouse active

environmentalism for our clients, partners and constituents,” said Agnes Fidelino, MMLDC managing director, as she accepted the award in behalf of the center. MMLDC’s concern for the environment goes beyond clean surroundings. Environmentalism isn’t just an advocacy, it’s a way of life. The center, which is located in Antipolo, runs an electric-jeep that shuttles people around. Akin to the e-jeep, which is a pollution-free vehicle, MMLDC is a zero-waste facility since 2000. The center has implemented waste segregation, recycling and resource conservation, and posters and signs are prominently displayed and distributed throughout the facilities. MMLDC’s Academic Hall, in particular, has banners that openly promote these green strategies.

“Love for the environment is also

ingrained into the daily practices in the center, even promoting this passion to visitors and guests who use the facilities for their training requirements. Guests are thus inspired to implement “zero- waste” in their own offices, buildings, or backyards,” said Fidelino. She added: “MMLDC’s effective solid waste management program reduced the waste generated by the Center by 24 percent. MMLDC’s Materials Recovery Facility [MRF], a role model, has encouraged and trained public schools in Antipolo to maintain their own MRFs.” In the ZBO, MMLDC showcased its good practices in waste management. There are five categories: waste segregation, reduction, reuse/recycling, composting, and green technology for residual waste, and MMLDC participated in four of them. The award was given during the culminating ZBO awards ceremony on Earth Day. Sharing the Grandmaster title with MMLDC is Unilever, another company that espouses environmentally friendly practices. Some of the organizations that were also recognized in this event included

Smart, Coca Cola, Ayala Land, Quezon Power, Manila Doctors Hospital, Bayer Philippines, Team Energy, Cravings Group of Companies, to name a few. The ZBO is a venue for showcasing how businesses manage waste by applying innovative and practical solid waste management practices. It is organized by Philippine Business for Social Progress, Philippine Business for the Environment, and Earth Day Network

Philippines Inc., with the support of the Pollution Control

Association of the Philippines Inc. and the Association of Safety Practitioners of the Philippines Inc. The event was created to support the implementation of ESWM Act 2000, a comprehensive law that creates mechanisms and incentives to address the country’s garbage problem.

Miss Earth winners serve as spokespersons for environmental awareness, initiating big and small changes through Miss Earth Foundation Inc., an international non-stock, nonprofit environmental-social- humanitarian organization. As ambassadors of the environ- ment, the Miss Earth beauties, together with their local affiliate Miss Philippines-Earth, constantly pursue partners in their advocacy of resusci- tating Mother Earth and undoing human damage to the environment. The coronation night of Miss Philippines-Earth was held on April 24 at The Acquatica, Manila Ocean Park. The crowned beauties were Miss Philippines-Earth Kris Psyche Resus from Infanta, Quezon; Miss

Philippines-Water Emerie Dale Cunanan from Pandan, Antique; Miss Philippines-Fire Gwennaelle Ruais from the Filipino Community of France; Miss Philippines-Air Rene Rosario McHugh from the Filipino Community of USA East Coast; and Miss Philippines-Eco- Tourism Angela Fernando from Lubao, Pampanga.

In keeping with its kyosei philosophy, Canon has always incorporated into its manufac- turing and corporate procedures the proper care and conserva- tion of the environment. As the perfect digital printing partner, Canon Marketing Philippines offered the Miss Philippines- Earth 2010 the services of three of its most powerful large format printers: the Canon imagePRESS C7000VP, imagePROGRAF iPF8000S and Pixma Pro 9500.

■ Sitel inaguarates a computer learning facility

The gift of learning

TODAY, computer literacy is one of the best tools toward a better education for high-school stu- dents. Exposing students to basic programs such as MS Word, Excel, or PowerPoint could help them in doing their projects during the school year and even when they reach college. However, not all families of the students can afford personal computers. Their schools are also not equipped with these facilities because of limited resources. That is why Sitel, a leading business process outsourcing company, recently turned over 30 computers to Nagpayong High School in Pasig City to help students on computer literacy and communication skills. The project was initiated by Sitel in partnership with Mayor Bobby Eusebio of Pasig City and Springboard Foundation. This fulfills of one of the four focus areas of Sitel’s corporate social responsibility program, Sitel Footprints. Under education and job generation, Sitel aims to assist with the creation of new jobs and development of young talents.

“We appreciate Sitel’s donation and we are now confident that our students will become skillful computer users in the future. And I’m sure that the students will be more than happy to learn new things that are relevant and current,” said Flor Laxamana, officer in charge and head of Nagpayong High School Nagpayong High School was chosen by Springboard Foundation as the recipient of the 30 personal computers. The school was selected because it is a relatively new school—it is still undergoing construction and development. Sitel assists the school in creating avenues and facilities in this early stage that will help in the education of the students from low-income communi- ties around the school. This is Sitel’s first ever compu- ter hub donation, but it will not be the last. Sitel has earmarked other communities where it operates in to help more students under this program. Now, students, faculty, and Sitel executives are looking toward the next school year of Nagpayong High School.
