welcome..from Winifred Sloan, Provost of South Ayrshire
I’m delighted to welcome golfers of all ages and abilities to the South Ayrshire Golf Events
programme 2010. The stunning South Ayrshire shoreline is often referred to as Scotland’s golf coast and
boasts the inaugural home of The Open Championship. People the world over experienced a taste of what
we can offer when the 2009 Open Championship was played at Turnberry, arguably one of the most
exciting championships in golfing history. Golf South Ayrshire operates eight public courses each of
which is maintained to the highest standards and available to pay and play at a modest rate.
The courses are all set in spectacular surroundings, with their own unique challenges and local
character guaranteed to charm and challenge golfers of all levels! Indeed, there are few places in the world
where you can play on a testing links course in the morning and then, just a short distance away, enjoy
a tranquil round of golf in beautiful parkland in the afternoon. South Ayrshire also boasts two out of the five current Scottish
Open venues in Turnberry and Royal Troon as well as the renowned Prestwick course all of which are recognised as jewels
in the crown of global golf. We take our golf very seriously and I’m delighted our well established junior golf development
programme is entering its fifth year.
The scheme gives Primary 5 pupils the chance to try golf during school time. Last year it even attracted the attention of
Jack Nicklaus who took a group of children through a masterclass at Turnberry. Even if you are not taking part in the golfing
events, there’s still so much to see and do with breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, fine food and drink, all there to
stimulate and entice you – and all served up with our famous warm South Ayrshire hospitality! Whether you’re playing,
visiting or are a local resident, please take the time to relax, enjoy what’s on offer and discover the unique sporting and
cultural pleasures South Ayrshire has to offer.
