The Many Faces of
Daphne Reid

F
or many of us, changing life course means steering away from our comfort
zones, and isn’t something we’re really, well, comfortable with. For Daphne
Reid, every undefined moment has become a crossroads in her journey
to success and ultimately defined the woman she’s become today. Having the
ability to stay open to life lessons that unfold in the process has, for her, always
been the norm.
Growing up on Manhattan’s West Side, Daphne’s early years were
marked with an initial desire to attend the Fashion Industries High School;
she was swayed to attend the Bronx High School of Science instead, where
she received a scholarship to attend Northwestern University in Illinois. While
there, one of Daphne’s teachers submitted a photograph of her to a modeling
agency. A new career in modeling suddenly took hold, where she would
eventually earn the honor of being the first African-American woman to grace
the cover of Glamour magazine.
While traveling in Chicago in the early 70s, Daphne met comedian Tim
Reid and the two would go on to marry in 1982. With Tim by her side, she
made her way onto the television scene, appearing on numerous hit television
shows, including T.J. Hooker, The A-Team, Murder, She Wrote and Simon &
Simon. In 1993, Daphne joined the cast of the hit series The Fresh Prince of Bel
Air in the role of Aunt Viv, and remained there until the show’s end in 1996.
Daphne’s next venture transitioned her from a high profile celebrity in front
of the cameras to one behind the scenes. Following a mutual dream to one
day relocate back to Tim’s home state of Virginia, Tim and Daphne, along with
several other partners, founded New Millennium Studios in 1997. There they
created the first and only full-service studio in Petersburg, Virginia. To this day,
they continue to produce film, television, music videos and commercial projects
year round.
Daphne currently travels across the country sharing her empowering journey
with others, and will be featured as the next speaker at the Greater Richmond
Chamber’s Extraordinary Women’s Exchange. V
