[ reader tiPs ] Bonfire Wisdom Fire Weed
In Scouts, we used the fluff from cattails as a fire starter. This fall when I was canoeing near Algon- quin Park, I wanted to show my paddling part- ner this technique. To my surprise there were no cattails to be found! However, there were plenty of milkweed plants with a similar fluff. The milk- weed pollen ignited quickly and worked just as well as any expensive fire starter.

smokin’ Clean Pots
Nothing is worse than coming home from a long canoe trip and having to clean your soot-blacked stainless steel or aluminum pots after cooking over an open fire. My advice to all canoe trippers is to protect your pots by coating the outside with biodegradable soap. It makes them easier to clean afterwards. Another alternative is to use vinegar, cream of tartar, a stainless steel scrubby and a little elbow grease.

Hailey
again, her upbringing has been far from usual. The current U.S. Women’s C1 Slalom National Champion was brought up by parents who ran a 15-foot waterfall on their first date. John Thompson and Jean Buckley built a sla-
C
lom course literally in their backyard and dropped everything so Hailey could compete in the Inter- national Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Championship in Spain last summer—the first year that women have been allowed to compete. When Hailey was too young to hold a paddle;
she would watch her mother paddle a dragon boat, wishing she could join in. Soon, she was enjoying family paddling trips, attending white- water camps and competing in local Wisconsin slalom races. At 13, coaches encouraged Thompson to at- tend the 2007 U.S. Canoe and Kayak Junior Olym-

pics where she won junior C1 Olympic champi- on. She hasn’t looked back, deciding to specialize in canoe slalom and take it as far as she can. As the 2009 National Champion and ranked
14th in the world, it’s a sure bet that if women’s ca- noe slalom is accepted in the 2012 Olympics, Hai-
ley will be in London, fighting for a podium place. Hailey will appear in the upcoming DVD, This is Ca-
noeing, to be released spring 2010.
