the height of the 1908 dam is one component of the “Norris Plan.” RWSA officials
have said a decision is needed quickly about the Ragged Mountain Dam because
officials with the Virginia Dam Safety office have said corrective actions (replacing
or repairing the 1908 dam) must be completed by February 2013. City Council
dismissed Schnabel Engineering’s proposal to complete the study in 6 months for
$188,803 expressing preference for a firm independent from the dam replacement
project. RWSA has estimated that the City’s independent study of the 13 foot
increase could not be completed before November 2010, three months after RWSA
officials had been expecting to approve preliminary designs for the new Ragged
Mountain Dam.
As the findings of these studies are shared, Charlottesville Tomorrow will
continue its in-depth coverage of the community water supply plan in 2010.

For more than four years, Charlottesville Tomorrow has played an important role
educating and engaging the public, and earning the community’s trust. Our goal is to
provide clear, objective, non-partisan information and research on the critical land use,
transportation, and community design issues in Charlottesville-Albemarle.
We believe that an informed public will make decisions that will protect and build upon the
distinctive character of this special place. It is our water, and our future.
