NUT at your fingertips

The NUT’s website has a great new look and some useful new features – including an interactive online version of The Teacher. Julia Brandreth,
the union’s head of communications, gives a tour.

If you’ve visited the NUT website – www.teachers.org.uk – recently, you’ll have noticed a few changes. The site was relaunched in December, with a fresh design, streamlined structure and new features that harness the latest web 2.0 technologies. NUT members and staff around England and Wales were consulted before and during the redesign to ensure the new site not only looks good, but also provides materials in a user-friendly format.

Among the many improvements are:
• a contact map so you can easily find details of your local NUT association/division and email the secretary directly
• reorganised main and drop-down menus to make navigating the site easier
• an improved search facility
• a clear front page that highlights the union’s major campaigns and latest news
• a campaigns section with leaflets and briefings for you to print off and use in your workplace or community
• a new advice and guidance section full of useful information for members
• a feedback facility for reporting any editorial or technical problems you may be experiencing with the site
• a page-turning digital edition of The Teacher (see below).

The Teacher online

Click on the ‘Teacher online’ button at www.teachers.org.uk, and you’ll launch the magazine’s mini-site. Here you’ll find information about contributing to The Teacher in all sorts of ways, from reviewing books to sending in photos. Click on the ‘guidelines and deadlines’ button for full details, and keep an eye on the orange panel on the right of the screen for news of how you can get involved in forthcoming editions.

The animated mini-flipbook links to an interactive version of the latest edition, with a range of useful features including:

• a search function, which looks for your search term not only in the current edition but also in The Teacher‘s online archive
• a zoom function, so you can look at pictures in more detail or read articles in large type
• additional multimedia content, such as videos from NUTv and union events
• live links to websites, email contacts and connected articles
• facilities to bookmark articles, highlight content, add your own notes and email them to colleagues and friends
• a text-only version of the magazine – handy if you have a visual impairment and use ‘read aloud’ software, or if you want to reproduce articles from The Teacher in your own local publications (please credit the magazine if you do this!)
• a realistic ‘page-turning’ interface.
