Day 5 (22 nm)
An early departure out of Loch Moidart
before breakfast, followed by a sail across to
Eigg and on to Rum, where they anchored in
Loch Scresort for lunch. This was followed
by an afternoon ashore exploring Kinloch
Castle.
Day 6 (45 nm)
A long sail south from Rum, passing between
Mull and Coll. The settled weather meant
that the crew could call in at Staffa and go
ashore to explore the majestic Fingal’s Cave
before continuing south to the fi shing village
of Bunessan on the Ross of Mull. Dinner
consisted of fresh langoustines and a John 11
Dory - exchanged for the price of a few
pints as they were being landed on the
fi shing pier.
‘One of the joys of sailing in the
Western Isles in early summer is the
incredible abundance of seabirds:
rafts of guillemots and razorbills,
puffi ns, gannets, kittiwakes and Manx
shearwaters.’
Day 7 (45 nm)
Depart from Bunessan for the Sound of
Iona and a visit to the cathedral. The
afternoon started with careful navigation
through the Torran Rocks and then on to
the Garvellachs where the crew anchored
to await slack water in the Gulf of
Corryvreckan. During the passage through
the Corryvreckan ‘Ayla’ and her crew were
escorted by porpoises fi shing in the eddies.
A return passage through the Dorus Mhor
followed and then back to Crinan in time
for the last locking of the evening back
into the basin. The remainder of the
langoustines preceded the ‘last supper’
ashore at the hotel.
Day 8
A short run back along the canal to
Bellanoch, empty and clean the boat and
then set off for home again!
