Jingle on the James
Richmond’s newest holiday tradition…on the James River, no less
s a region steeped in history, Richmond has its share of holiday traditions.
A
Legendary Santa has been getting his beard tugged by Richmond’s tots
since the 1930s. Along Broad Street, the Christmas Parade will send
festooned holiday floats, giant helium balloons, and marching bands past
more than 100,000 spectators for the 26th time. Then there are the twinkling
traditions, from downtown’s Grand Illumination to Lewis Ginter’s Gardenfest of
Lights to the beloved tacky lights tours.
And now a new tradition: Richmond’s first holiday festival on the river, Jingle on
the James, December 12-13. The event will showcase the best of Virginia’s visual
artists amid an atmosphere of holiday-inspired sights, sounds and food, and a
parade of its own.
Presented by Rocketts Landing in partnership with VMFA Muse award-winning
One Smart Gallery, Jingle on the James will transform the riverside community into
an art village, featuring the works of more than 100 artists, including Ed Trask,
Rhonda Corley, Shaun Irving, Annie Ward Love and Jude Schlotzhauer, all of
whom will be at the festival.
Paintings, crafts and handcrafted jewelry will be on display in open
street-level homes and storefronts as well as throughout the Sky Line and
210 Rock buildings. Displayed pieces will also be available for purchase.
The Salvation Army Brass Band, Performing Arts Student Choir, and James
River Ringers will perform holiday favorites. Fine fare will be available at
Rocketts Landing restaurants, The Boathouse and Currant. And to keep you
warm, holiday favorites like hot cocoa, apple cider and cookies will be
available at Espresso-a-go-go. On Saturday, Rocketts Landing will serve
as a vantage point for taking in the Parade of Lights, featuring dozens of
boats and watercraft decorated with strings of shimmering lights. RVA HoOP
LOvers will be performing with LED lighted hula-hoops.
