in Hastings

The historical significance of Hastings comes from its connection with the Norman conquest of England and also because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports.

Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port and, although now much reduced, it has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in England. As with many other coastal areas in East Sussex, the town has become a popular seaside resort.

Hastings is steeped in history with many iconic landmarks that are still open to the public today. Two of the main attractions are the castle, located on the sandstone cliffs, and Hastings Pier. Sadly, violent storms in 2008 and damage from a blaze in 2010 have left the pier in a vulnerable position.

The old town of Hastings is also a significant landmark. Many of the buildings date from the Georgian period although the two churches are much older, dating as far back as the 14th century.

Hastings has two funicular lifts, known as West Hill and East Hill lifts respectively. Views from the top of these historical hills are outstanding.

Hastings has many great visitor attractions, including four museums, two theatres and the Blue Reef Aquarium. The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield have some great events throughout the year for all the family. There are many other shops and attractions clustered around the fish market in the town centre.

The pier has survived a pavilion fire, much storm damage, been a refuge for convalescing soldiers during WW1 and had a large section demolished during WW2 by the RAF to prevent German invasion. Despite this, Hastings pier has stood firm and during the 1960s gained a reputation for staging big-name rock concerts from the Rolling Stones to Tom Jones. Yet, by the 1980s, the pier had fallen into financial difficulty and in 2006 was shut over fears that it would collapse.

In 2010 the local council began the process of obtaining a compulsory purchase order to procure Hastings Pier and place it in the hands of the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) – a group that have been working tirelessly in a bid to save the much loved landmark. However, these plans were seriously jeopardised when, during the early hours of 5th October last year, another fire destroyed a large part of the pier’s superstructure.

But there is good news for Hastings Pier! In May 2011 the Heritage Lottery Fund announced that it will be awarding a grant to support the HPWRT in their work to save the pier. An exciting restoration programme is now under way to preserve the Eugenius Birch structure as well as introducing some inspiring new structural elements.

Hastings Pier opened on Monday 5th August 1872 on the country’s first ever Bank Holiday. Designed by the famous engineer Eugenius Birch, this impressive structure has provided a variety of entertainment for generations.
