YOUR UNION

A sporting chance

The Aviva and Daily Telegraph School Sport Matters awards recognise outstanding achievements in school sport across the country.

The awards are part of Aviva’s wider commitment to give every child in the country the opportunity to get involved in athletics by 2012.

Aviva and the Daily Telegraph have worked together to showcase and celebrate successes in school sport since 2004, recognising the best schools, teachers, teams and individuals in the country. In 2010 the NUT has come on board to support the State School of the Year award.

Despite a decline in competitive school sport over the past 20 years, the sale of school playing fields and rising rates of child obesity, teachers, parents and volunteers still deliver sport and PE with unbridled enthusiasm. School Sport Matters is a campaign which highlights exemplary practice in PE and the delivery of sport in schools, generating debate and celebrating the achievements of pupils, teachers and schools across the country.

The School Sport Matters campaign culminates annually with a national awards ceremony in which ten categories will go before the judging panel. Previous judges have included Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, James Cracknell, Darren Campbell, Brian Moore and a host of other sporting luminaries. Look out for how to enter in the January/February edition of The Teacher.

Savings and support from Teachers Building Society

Teachers Building Society, the only building society recommended by the NUT, has been helping members with mortgages and savings for over 40 years. It recently introduced a new Reward Saver account offering a great 3 per cent gross rate (AER) for the first year. This variable interest rate includes a bonus of 1.6 per cent.

Savers can make one withdrawal in the first 12 months without penalty. After that, Reward Saver becomes an easy-access account offering unlimited withdrawals.

Teachers Building Society’s savings products also include a Cash ISA Bonus with an interest rate of 3 per cent gross (AER), including a 1.25 per cent bonus until 5 April 2010. Teachers benefit from a lower minimum investment of £100.

For more information call 0800 378669 or visit www.teachersbs.co.uk.

Teachers Building Society was delighted to host a reception during the NUT division secretaries’ briefing at Stoke Rochford in October. Chief executive James Bawa thanked the many NUT associations that have invested in the Treasurers’ 25 Day Account, and appealed to all association secretaries to invest with Teachers Building Society to help provide mortgages for teachers.

Congratulations to Eddie Ritson, Sefton NUT association secretary, who won a magnum of champagne at the reception. Eddie is pictured (centre) with James Bawa (right) and John Dixon, NUT assistant secretary for organisation and membership.
