Tell
- by Jennifer Gallacher -
I have a fond memory of my Grandmother’s horsehair
couch. You could run your fingers along the embossed
design, and it had a certain comforting “grandmotherly”
smell to it. I remember spending hours at her house on
that couch. There are so many memories like this one
that I would like to share with my posterity, and one
great way to capture those memories is through the five
senses.
For this month’s article I asked designers to capture the sights, sounds, tastes,
smells, and touches around them. Sometime details like this are harder to
capture than event scrapbooking – I can talk until I’m blue in the face about
the smell of lilacs in the spring, but unless you’ve smelled them you won’t
know entirely what I’m talking about. It takes a little more effort and some
creativity to capture the five senses in your layouts.
I personally discovered on this journey that I have some deep-seated and
sometimes painful memories associated with my senses. It was cathartic to
journal about both the smell and sound of my son who passed away from
cancer only two years ago. Although it was difficult to record some of those
memories, I would never want to forget them.
In addition to the ideas on the following pages, here are some ways to capture
the five senses in your layouts:
• Spray your favorite cologne or perfume on a card and insert in your layout.
• Add a fabric swatch of your baby’s favorite blanket when it wears out.
• Include a CD with your current playlist.
• Include a secret family recipe, along with a photo of the completed dish.
• Loan your camera to someone else to get his or her perspective on life.
