Large Fans Can
Save Schools Energy

Community College
Chandler, Ariz., is one of only a handful of
colleges nationwide to receive the Associa-
tion for the Advancement of Sustainability
in Higher Education Campus Sustainability
Award. With sustainability a part of the in-
stitution’s strategic goals, students, faculty
and staff have committed themselves to
energy and water conservation, increased
use of recyclable and biodegradable
products, and curriculum choices focusing
on conservation and sustainability.
A unique addition within The Student
Center Pavilion is the installation of three
20-foot-diameter fans, which enhance
the comfort and energy effi ciency of the
4,000-square-foot space. “There is a direct
relationship to our sustainability initia-
tive and utilizing the fans, defi nitely with
consideration to energy conservation,” says
Bruce Scharbach, director of facilities ser-
vices for the college. “During the summer
months when we use air conditioning, the
fans supplement the cooling in our space.
Moving air and evaporatively cooling the
folks down below is always a good thing.”
Tulane University
Dealing with heat and humidity is
certainly necessary in New Orleans. With
its old-world charm comes antiquated
cooling systems that are no match for the
brutal summers. Tulane University’s newly
remodeled Lavin-Bernick Center, or LBC,
incorporates natural air and lighting along
with various shading and ventilation tech-
niques to keep 10,000 daily visitors cool.
Incorporating these passive cooling tech-
niques, along with three 10-foot-diameter
overhead fans, LBC was able to forego the
