Dog News:
First Cloned
Sniffer Dogs
Begin Work.
The world's first cloned
sniffer dogs have started
work in South Korea's customs service to
check for drugs at its main airports and
border crossings.
A customs spokesman at Seoul's
Incheon, Park Jeong-Heon said: ''They
are the world's first cloned sniffer dogs
deployed at work.''
The 7 dogs were cloned from a ''superb''
drug-sniffing Canadian Labrador Retriever
called Chase in 2007.
They have recently completed a 16-month
training programme, with 6 of the dogs
eligible for duty, as one suffered an injury.
The dogs are all called Toppy, mixing the
words ''tomorrow'' and ''puppy''.
The customs agency have said that these
clones help to lower crime-fighting costs,
as it's hard to get good sniffer dogs.
Figures show that only 30% of naturally
born sniffer dogs are good enough to
work; South Korean scientists have said
that cloning sniffer dogs could see this
figure rise to 90%.
