Germany on a troop ship. I believe it
was the USS Geiger. I headed up one
of the KP details in one of the mess
halls. About halfway through the
voyage, things were getting pretty
boring. So a friend and I began sit-
ting down at various tables during
breakfast one morning and started
discussing how we would be passing
by the Atlantic mail buoy that eve-
ning and that we had to have our let-
ters into the troop sergeant major’s
offi ce by 1400 hours. Well, it didn’t
take too long before an exasperated
sergeant major came on the troop
intercom informing all aboard that
there was no Atlantic mail buoy and
to stop bringing mail to his offi ce.
[Coincidentally,] I shipped to
Korea in 1961 on the USS Gaffey. I
guess Lieutenant Commander Ham-
lett wasn’t on my sailing, as I don’t
recall anything about an internation-
al mail buoy.
