AGA CAsT IRON Made in Britain
inside every new piece of Cast iron cookware there is a little bit of an old one.
History
Cast iron has been part of Britain’s history for over three centuries. This year, Coalbrookdale Foundry is celebrating
its 300th anniversary. Abraham Darby founded the Coalbrookdale Company in Shropshire, now renowned as The
Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It is here that he developed the smelting of iron with coke instead of charcoal
to make cast iron cooking pots.
Coalbrookdale and Darby are famous for many other milestones of the Industrial Revolution including the first iron
bridge over the river Severn, the first iron engine cylinder and the first cast iron tramway.
The Coalbrookdale Foundry is still very much a working foundry today making castings for the AGA cooker, Rayburn
cooker as well as continuing its tradition in producing the AGA range of cast iron cooking vessels. Each casting is hand
made and has its own unique sand mould, which is destroyed after use.
Cast iron cookware has been made by Coalbrookdale for 300 years.
